The story of Veronika

When Felix was born in 2019 everything seemed perfectly fine – but with 10 weeks old, epileptic seizures started. After a short while of being seizure free they came back when he was 5 months old. The number of daily seizures increased and increased – up to 250 per day. No medication helped. He was always a happy boy, but his development suffered severely. Doctors told the parents that they have to accept that no cause will be found and that Felix will never be seizure free. But – giving up wasn’t an option. And so they found another hospital, specialized in epilepsy. Another MRI was done (the 4th) and FINALLY, after 2 years of searching the cause was found: Mild malformation of cortical dysplasia type II over the whole right hemisphere of the brain. Only option and only chance for Felix: a massive brain surgery – Hemispherotomy, where the right side of the brain was disconnected from the rest of the body. From the day of surgery until now, 6 months later – Felix is seizure free and finally started to development again. He is smiling and laughing and a very happy boy – living with just the left side of his brain.
