Rare Disease Day in Hungary
Patient organisations in Hungary have engaged in Rare Disease Day since its launch in 2008. Various events have aimed to use the day for advocacy purposes as well as for raising awareness amongst the general public. Events have included workshops, letter-writing campaigns, art contests and consultations with government officials to discuss rare diseases policies.
For Rare Disease Day 2017, events run by HUFERDIS, the Hungarian Federation of People with Rare and Congenital Diseases, were focused in Debrecen, the second largest city in Hungary. There was entertainment for rare disease patients and their families comprising live music performances, arts and crafts, and face painting. The programme also included a press conference, information booths run by patient organisations, and a round-table discussion on rare diseases featuring patient representatives, health professionals and politicians. The winners of a nationwide photo contest, ‘Happy Moments of Rare Disease Patients’, were exhibited alongside events; winning artworks from another nationwide contest, ‘Collection of Rare Beauties’, were selected for exhibition in Budapest.
