Rare Disease Day in Georgia
Georgia first became involved with Rare Disease Day in 2010. Over the years, rare disease conferences have been planned to coincide with the day, and the former First Lady of Georgia, Sandra Elisabeth Roelofs, has been extremely active in her support for the campaign.
On Feb 28 in the Holiday Inn Tbilisi the Georgian Foundation for Genetic and Rare Diseases organized a conference that brought together up to 300 participants: healthcare decision-makers, medical professionals and researchers working in the field of rare diseases, patients and their parents, medical educational institutions personnel, and other civil society representatives. Leaders of the Foundation presented the audience a retrospective analysis of the organization's activities over the past 10 years. Issues related to rare diseases, the most urgent for today's Georgia, were interactively discussed. In addition, the press-conference and an essay contest on the theme of 'biomarkers in the diagnosis of rare diseases' for medical students organized by the Georgian Society of Medical Genetics and Epigenetics took place in the Tbilisi State Medical University.
