Rare Disease Day in Cyprus
Cyprus patient organisations joined Rare Disease Day in its second year, in 2009. Participants have used the day to successfully engage the media in press conferences and therefore increase awareness in the general public. A previous highlight was in 2016 when children living with rare diseases accompanied football players onto the pitch holding a poster, which read ‘Nature made me rare, you can make me strong.’
Similarly to 2018, Rare Disease Day 2019 events included a concert supported by the Ministry of Health and in collaboration with a university. School children also got involved in more than 240 schools across Cyprus by wearing jeans to school and devoting parts of biology lessons to learning about rare diseases as part of a ‘Wear that you care’ campaign. Television broadcasts throughout the month of February to raise awareness took place and the Cyprus National alliance for Rare Disorders hosted a roundtable discussion with health insurance organisations on the inclusion of people with rare diseases.
