Patient organisations in Bulgaria have participated in Rare Disease Day since the first celebration in 2008. The day was endorsed by the First Lady at the time, Zorka Parvanova, who lent her support publically to the cause. In 2017, events included a march through the streets in Sofia and a joint press conference with the Ministry of Health, at which the creation of a national registry for rare disease patients was announced.
In 2020 a balloon launch was organised to celebrate Rare Disease Day. Thousands of balloons were released into the sky symbolising different rare diseases.Â
