Rare Disease Day events were first held in 2016 in Zimbabwe. 2016 saw the official opening of the first Muscular Dystrophy Centre in Zimbabwe, which was attended by policy makers, medical professionals, volunteers, and patients living with a rare disease and their loved ones. In 2017 celebrations focused on research with a crowdfunding campaign being launched to raise money for research.
