South Africa

South Africa first participated in Rare Disease Day in 2010, focusing on increasing the visibility of rare diseases amongst the general public. Since then, patient organisations have launched many successful media campaigns and have reached out to important ministers within the government to stress the need for official policy on rare diseases. An annual “Denim Walk” takes place through the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens to raise awareness of those living with rare diseases.
