Hall of fame - Dr. Dumitru Moldovan

Dr. Moldovan’s research on hereditary angioedema (HAE) in Romania has resulted in bringing together patients from around Romania and the establishment of a Pilot Reference Center for Patients with HAE. Dr. Moldovan and his team started the work with finding patients in 2005, and the first research project in 2007. Dr. Moldovan has registered 63 patients and 25 have participated in the research studies. These studies led to registering of one orphan drug in Europe and the United States in 2009 and Dr. Moldovan and his team are expecting to register another drug in 2010. His research focuses on drug treatment for patients with C1 inhibitor deficiency. The recognition of this disorder is imperative as well as the availability of the right medication, since this kind of angioedema does not respond to antihistamines, corticosteroids or epinephrine. Dr.  Moldovan works tirelessly to raise awareness of the disorder in Romania, while networking with other professionals on the international level. He is literally made himself available, 24 hours a day by phone, which is critical to HAE patients when attacks can develop at anytime.

Along with four scientific papers, Dr. Moldovan and his team have published articles about HAE and their work clearly focuses on improving the life of patients with HAE through treatment and research. His work in founding the Romanian Hereditary Angioedema Network (http://www.haenet.ro/) provides support to physicians and patients with hereditary angioedema.
