Rare Disease Day in South Africa
South Africa first participated in Rare Disease Day in 2010, focusing on increasing the visibility of rare diseases amongst the general public. Since then, patient organisations have launched many successful media campaigns and have reached out to important ministers within the government to stress the need for official policy on rare diseases. In 2016, events included cocktails nights to raise awareness and funds for people living with a rare disease, and a colouring competition that used social media to increase the visibility of the rare disease communitity in South Africa and internationally.
