Once again PICOMSA join hands with the rest of the world in solidarity with people touched by rare diseases worldwide in commemorating Rare Disease Day on February 28 2013. Our main focus remains enhancing the visbility of rare diseases in South African communities through promotion of public awareness using social/print media and community outreach programmes.

Cystinosis is a rare genetic metabolic disorder which causes an accumulation of the amino acid cystine in cells, forming crystals that can build up and damage the cells. These crystals negatively affect many systems in the body, such as the kidneys, liver, spleen, thyroid, muscles, eyes and brain.
