Rare Disease Day in Brazil
Brazil first participated in Rare Disease Day in 2010. Over the years, celebrations have extended throughout the entire week leading up to Rare Disease Day to raise support and awareness for rare disease patients. Highlights have included the March for Rare Diseases and the airing of a television documentary on rare diseases. Former international footballer and now politician, Romário, agreed to support the campaign for a National Rare Disease Day in parliament in 2012.
In 2016, there was a day of seminars held in San Paolo by AFAG whose speakers included notable geneticists on topics that ranged from diagnosis to rare disease from a family’s perspective. Events also took place in Rio de Janeiro, ranging from a march to a symposium.
