Rare Disease Day in Australia ?
Australia first participated in Rare Disease Day in 2009, hosting many exciting events to raise awareness among the general public. There have been fundraisers ranging from BBQs to movie nights, educational forums, and walks/runs to raise awareness. Additionally, the Australian cricketer Steve Waugh publically demonstrated his support for the day.
In 2015, events occurred from coast to coast, in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Cairns, and small towns alike. A conference discussed achievements toward a National Plan, a community consultation meeting discussed healthcare service gaps for rare disease patients, and the 2nd annual "Rare Stars Day" invited rare disease patients and their families to connect with others in the rare disease community for a day of fun at the Sydney zoo.
